Antigonish

When I’m not out hiking with my two amazing dogs, I love to sew, stitch, take photographs, cook (vegan and gluten free), garden and grow indoor plants, practice Feldenkrais, and decorate.

Erica and Scott Baker

I am Erica Baker and I am married to my best friend, Scott. I grew up in a small community on the beautiful Cape Breton Island. I was privileged to have a large family that was so intertwined in our community that I believed everyone was my family. We grew up apart from materialism – we valued food, friends and family. If someone needed anything, we would come together as a community to make it work. Share what we have, even if there is not much. Bartering was and is still a way of life to support all of our community.

My role model was my grandmother, Almeda (Memere). She was fierce, selfless and kind. She welcomed all to her home and treated strangers like royalty ensuring all bellies were full before she would put a crumb to her lip. We would sit at the table and share stories, life lessons and play cards. This was always my “happy place”.

After spending 15 years in Alberta, my husband and I knew our hearts (and our family) belonged back on the East Coast. In 2018 we made a decision to pack up our two sons and our husky to make Antigonish home. Now that we are settled in our forever home and forever community, we want to build on the legacy that my Memere ingrained in me. Share your stories, share your gifts, share your food and share your joy.

For Memere, we are starting the Antigonish Life.School.House chapter!   We are excited to open our home for classes. I am a crafter of all sorts (cross stitch, crochet, loom, knit, macramé, etc) and look forward to learning more from our new community. I am so excited to engage and bring people to gather around a table and share knowledge and friendship.
